Refreshing a stuck battery reading
When the numbers stop moving but the battery is working perfectly.
How to tell this is what is happening
The giveaway is a reading that sits perfectly still when it has no business doing so. Look for:
- A voltage or current figure that has not moved at all for a long stretch, down to the last decimal place.
- A percentage that refuses to climb while the battery is clearly charging, or refuses to fall while you are clearly using power.
- Everything else behaving normally. The battery still connects, the app still finds it, and the vehicle still runs off it.
That last point is the important one. If the battery has stopped responding altogether, or has switched itself off, that is a different situation and the guide on recovering a flat battery is the one you want.
Normal readings do sit still sometimes. A parked vehicle with nothing switched on genuinely has very little going on, and a figure that has not changed for ten minutes is not evidence of anything. What you are looking for is a number frozen through a period when it should obviously have moved.
Route one: through the app
This works on every TITAN battery and it is the route to try first.
- Hibernate the battery. On the battery page, open Power Management and choose Hibernate.
- Close the app straight away, and leave it closed. This is the step people get wrong, and it is the reason the fix sometimes appears not to work.
- Connect a charger to wake it. Mains, solar or DC to DC, whichever is easiest. The battery comes back with its readings refreshed.
Route two: the button, on larger batteries
Our larger batteries have a silver button between the terminals. The blue ring around it is lit when the battery is on. Switching it off, leaving it a moment, and switching it back on achieves the same restart as route one.
This route is only available on the larger units. Smaller batteries do not have this button, and if yours does not have one, that is normal and route one is your answer.
What this does not affect
It is a restart of the battery's electronics, nothing more. Worth saying plainly, because the word restart makes people nervous:
- Nothing is lost. Your stored history stays exactly as it was.
- No settings change. Anything you have configured stays configured.
- The cells are not touched at all. The energy in the battery is unaffected.
- The battery is safe to use throughout, and safe to leave connected to everything it was already connected to.
- You do not open anything, undo anything, or disconnect any cabling.
If the reading is still stuck
Give the battery a full charge cycle first, since a stuck percentage in particular will often sort itself out at the top of a charge when the BMS re-references its counter. If the percentage is your complaint rather than the voltage or current, the guide on why your battery percentage drifts is probably a better fit than this page.
If a genuinely frozen reading survives a restart, please get in touch and we will pick it up from there. Every TITAN carries a lifetime warranty, transferable if the vehicle changes hands, and this is well within the sort of thing we sort out on a phone call.
