TITAN Labs - prototype product

This is a Labs unit. Honestly described, not guaranteed - the BMS is tuned to suit starter-duty alternator behaviour, so we cover it with an 8-year limited warranty instead of our standard lifetime cover.

Alternator-friendly BMS

Built to live behind an alternator.

Most lithium starter packs use a BMS firmware tuned for off-grid leisure use. Drop one into a vehicle and the protection thresholds trip during normal alternator operation - and your dashboard lights up with charging-system faults.

TITAN Labs
15V / 3.75V
Pack / cell over-voltage trip
Typical lithium starter
14.6V / 3.65V
Same threshold most off-grid packs use

Tighter thresholds cause false trips during normal alternator operation. Ours don't.

  • 14.2-14.6V
Recommended charge window. Squarely inside every regulated alternator's output range. The BMS sees a normal charging system and accepts charge normally.
  • 15V / 3.75V
Hard trip only at fault. Set deliberately high so the BMS doesn't interrupt normal charging - a regulated alternator should never reach this in working order.
  • 14.0V
Automatic reconnect. No manual reset, no latched contactor. The BMS waits for voltage to normalise and resumes charging.
  • Split MOSFETs
No load-dump at the alternator. Charge and discharge are independently switched - even when the BMS does protect, the discharge path stays closed and the bus keeps power.
Smart enough to forget about

Convenience built into the BMS.

The same firmware behaviours as our leisure range, tuned for vehicle duty. Three things you shouldn't have to think about, and won't.

300A
Pulse discharge / 3s

Pre-charge on cranking.

The BMS pre-charges the discharge MOSFETs before any cranking event, so the inrush of starter current doesn't shock the FETs. Headroom up to 300A for three seconds - more than any 12V engine demands, leaving the BMS comfortably inside its protection envelope.

0.16 mA
Hibernation draw

Sleeps deeply when truly idle.

After ten minutes of no current and cells below 3V, the BMS drops into hibernation. Self-discharge becomes negligible at 0.16 mA. Wakes on charge or app reconnect - but note the advisory below: if the pack does hibernate, the output is off, which means no central locking either.

BLE
TITAN app

Whole pack on your phone.

Pair with the TITAN app for live cell voltages, current in amps and watts, SOC as a percentage and in Ah, estimated time to full or empty, protection trip history, and live balancing activity. Third-party Bluetooth apps can read but not write.

Inside the pack

What's actually built into this thing.

Hand-built by our partner factory to a TITAN spec sheet. End-pack QC in Cheltenham - every battery passes through our final inspection and check process before it ships.

01
Cells
Grade A+ prismatic LiFePO4

From the same EVE and CATL automotive cell lines as our leisure range. Every cell graded and matched before assembly.

02
Module config
4S1P

Series/parallel arrangement inside the case. Single string of four cells - the simpler, lower-resistance layout that fits the smaller DIN case.

03
Balancing
Dual active & passive

Active balancing moves energy between cells at a 30mV delta. Passive bleeds handle the smaller 15-30mV differences. Same firmware as the leisure range, where it's run for over a decade.

04
Internal resistance
<10 mΩ

Sub-10 milliohm pack resistance. Low enough that cranking pulses don't sag voltage below the BMS's discharge cut-off, which is what kills cheaper lithium starter integrations.

05
Thermal envelope
-20°C to +65°C

Discharge from -20°C - it'll crank a cold engine. Charge from 0°C up. FET thermal cut-off at 90°C if anything ever runs hot.

06
Build
ABS case, SAE + M8

ABS casing. SAE side post plus M8 stud on each terminal - fits the OE harness and accepts direct M8 cable lugs. Terminals torqued to 10-15 N·m at final QC.

8 yr
Limited Labs warranty. Honest about lifespan. The BMS in a Labs pack is configured to permit a small, deliberate amount of cell over-charge so the alternator never sees a hard cut-off. That keeps the alternator safe, but it accelerates wear, so we warrant for 8 years rather than pretend it has the lifespan of our standard leisure batteries.
